The Nelson Lighthouse is located on the southern end of the Boulder Bank overlooking the narrow harbour entrance through the cut. The lighthouse was lit up for 120 years with numerous lighthouse keepers calling it home and was New Zealand's 2nd permanent lighthouse. Built in 1862 it is listed as a heritage building and is regularly given a fresh coat of white paint. While it does not shine its light anymore the lighthouse is an iconic part of the Port Nelson landscape and has many visitors throughout the year.
