When I was a child, my parents used to pack us four kids in the car and drive into the night, straight down the west coast to Okarito. We would stay in a little bach on the beach with the waves crashing in the distance throughout the night. I remember endless miles of untouched sand and Dad getting up at dawn to take his scoop net to the estuary mouth for whitebait. This little boatshed was passed daily on our adventures around the area.
