At a very early stage is Birdcage Hut, with the first heavy base layers laid down and the initial details emerging.
Situated towards the head of the Cass River in the Glenmore Station near Lake Tekapo Birdcage Hut is nestled against the Haszard Ridge on the valley floor at just under 1100 meters above sea level.
This hut is a derelict one, classed as a ruin and not recommended to stay in, however it caught my eye - silhouetted against the sweeping mountains with the dry grass whispering in the breeze.
I love the muted yet richly layered colour palette in this painting. While you're seeing it at a very early stage, the finished work will feature luminous layers with the bleached oak tones contrasting against the stony hues.
I imagine this little hut holds many stories, a silent witness to countless seasons and a rich history of life in New Zealand's high country.

I'm getting into the finer detail now on the Poolburn Dam painting. The morning mist rising off the cool water as the sun warmed it was a challenge. It adds a great mood and is only visible for such a short time early in the morning so I really wanted to include this...
