Hawkdun Range & Falls Dam

Michelle Bellamy creates paintings of the huts around Falls Dam and the Hawkdun Range because they capture many of the themes central to her work, remote landscapes, backcountry history and the relationship between people and the land. The small fishing huts and cribs, set against vast golden tussock hills and the Hawkdun Range, provide a striking contrast between human scale and the enormity of the Central Otago landscape.
She is particularly drawn to the character and history of these simple, abandoned and weathered structures. Many are reminders of an earlier way of life and may not remain unchanged forever. By painting them, Michelle is able to document and celebrate these places while they are still part of the landscape.
For Michelle, the huts are therefore more than picturesque subjects. They tell stories of people, place and a disappearing piece of New Zealand's high-country history, while also allowing her to capture the vast beauty and atmosphere of the Central Otago landscape that she loves exploring.

Inspired by the vast, open country surrounding the Hawkdun Range, this artwork captures the solitude and scale of one of Otago's most striking high-country landscapes. The Hawkdun Range rises above the dry tussock country of Central Otago, where broad valleys, distant mountains and changing light create a landscape that feels both rugged and peaceful. Michelle Bellamy's painting focuses on that sense of space and quiet, with a lone feature set against the sweeping hills and mountain backdrop that define this part of the South Island.
