Michelle Bellamy is inspired by Poolburn Dam for its striking contrasts and the small details hidden within its vast Central Otago landscape. Golden tussock-covered hills, unusual schist rock formations, open skies and deep blue water create a remote, timeless setting. She is particularly fascinated by the collection of small fishing huts scattered around the reservoir, each with its own character and often tucked out of the wind surprisingly close to the rocks. Their tiny scale against the expansive landscape creates a strong sense of place and story. Through these paintings, Michelle captures not only Poolburn’s dramatic scenery & sense of isolation, but the unexpected details that reward closer exploration.
