Silence at Sundown, Hawkdun Range at Fall's Dam, Central Otago, New Zealand
Original artwork painted with acrylic on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
2000 x 1000mm
Completed 2022
This painting captures the last touch of Autumn sunlight highlighting the grass with the expansive Hawkdun Range basking in the background.
These little buildings are scattered around the edge of Fall's Dam, some still being used as fisherman huts while others fade slowly into the past.
Fall's Dam is a breathtakingly quiet and peaceful escape. On this still evening only the sound of a few distant sheep intermittently broke the silence.

Back of Beyond, Paratītahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand
Original acrylic painting on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
1000 x 1000mm
Completed 2021
Emerging over the final ridge before plunging down into the Arnst River valley you come across what seems like paradise. The Paratītahi Tarns sit together, nestled in a gentle rolling basin of tussock with a glimpse of Mt Chittenden (2205m) in the far distance.
This painting is a labour of love. Many many hours were spent shaping the golden contours, detailing the scree slopes and blending the blues to take you back towards the distant mountains. Every day working on this painting took me up into the ranges and I hope it takes you there too.

Last Snow, Farewell Paratītahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand
Original acrylic painting on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
800 x 500mm
Completed 2020
Sold at the Parnell Gallery as part of the "Layers of Aotearoa" exhibition.
The Paratītahi Tarns are a little bit of a secret. Off the beaten track, towards the end of the Saint Arnaud Range, at the head of the Arnst and surprisingly easily accessed from the Rainbow basin or from the head of Lake Rotoiti. After scrabbling along the side of the ridge over bulky boulders, you emerge over a saddle and paradise is laid out before you. It is a truely magical network of tarns with little creeks tricking into one another surrounded by complete silence apart from the sound of moving water.

Falling Dusk at the Hawkduns, Otago, New Zealand
Original artwork painted with acrylic on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
1400 x 700mm
Completed 2019
Capturing the last breath of sunlight bathing the Hawkdun Range in Central Otago is: Falling Dusk at the Hawkduns by Nelson artist Michelle Bellamy. This is the sister painting to Before Dusk. Both these paintings explore the subtle changes in light as dusk approaches.
This painting is rich with layers of ochre, reds and burnt sienna complemented by soft blues. Many, many rich colour layers were built up over time to try and achieve that evening 'glow'. The Hawkdun Range is part of the Oteake Conservation Park and can be summited via Mt Ida, 1690m.

Before Dusk at the Hawkduns, Otago, New Zealand
Original artwork painted with acrylic on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
1000 x 1000mm
Completed 2019
Here is a painting of a Otago scene that I studied in autumn this year. After a quick glimpse 10 years ago, it called me back. I drove all day and into the night through storm, chasing the hope of a icing sugar dusting of snow on this fascinating range. I chose to do two similar paintings so that I could explore the light & colour changes during the 'magic hour' before dusk.
This painting is at the start of the process, showcasing the Hawkdun range in golden hues and stark contrast.
