Red Rhythms at the Boulder Bank, Nelson, New Zealand
Original acrylic painting on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
400 x 400mm
Completed 2022
The Boulder Bank (Te Taero a Kereopa) is a naturally formed, 13.5km spit of Boulders that extends west from the Glenduan. The boulders are smooth and round from the coastal currents, and the banks edge is filled with rock pools and reefs to the seaward side with many kingfish, snapper, blue cod and kahawai to keep the fisherman busy. Keep an eye out for the lazy bronze whalers who like to steal the caught fish.
There are now just 5 baches lined up along the spit, after one was recently destroyed in a fire in 2021. It is a barren place, exposed to the elements with no running water, no power and no shelter from the sun apart from a couple of stunted pōhutukawa trees.

Back of Beyond, Paratītahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand
Original acrylic painting on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
1000 x 1000mm
Completed 2021
Emerging over the final ridge before plunging down into the Arnst River valley you come across what seems like paradise. The Paratītahi Tarns sit together, nestled in a gentle rolling basin of tussock with a glimpse of Mt Chittenden (2205m) in the far distance.
This painting is a labour of love. Many many hours were spent shaping the golden contours, detailing the scree slopes and blending the blues to take you back towards the distant mountains. Every day working on this painting took me up into the ranges and I hope it takes you there too.

Last Snow, Farewell Paratītahi Tarns, Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand
Original acrylic painting on cedar framed board
By Michelle Bellamy
800 x 500mm
Completed 2020
Sold at the Parnell Gallery as part of the "Layers of Aotearoa" exhibition.
The Paratītahi Tarns are a little bit of a secret. Off the beaten track, towards the end of the Saint Arnaud Range, at the head of the Arnst and surprisingly easily accessed from the Rainbow basin or from the head of Lake Rotoiti. After scrabbling along the side of the ridge over bulky boulders, you emerge over a saddle and paradise is laid out before you. It is a truely magical network of tarns with little creeks tricking into one another surrounded by complete silence apart from the sound of moving water.

Kea Hut is lovingly restored by the Mt Robert Snow Sports Trust. Located in the Mt Robert area of Nelson Lakes National Park, this hut is only a couple of hundred meters from Bushline hut and can be seen from Paddys track which by-passes it. With a bright red roof it stands out from its nest in the tussock and beech trees. Accompanying the hut is a long-drop seemingly perched on the edge of the earth with spectacular views of the lake through Beech forest.

With the hills as a backdrop and memories of mountain biking along the peaks and troughs of the Richmond Ranges, knowing every hill and ridge by name, Michelle portrays the quiet solitude to be found in areas of the Nelson bays. On a still, incoming tide one of the Mai Mai's sits, proudly, seemingly alone with only a lapping sea for company.

After being tangled up in the reddish brown upright tentacles of the sarcocornia quinqueflora while Michelle floundered around the collection of mai mai's in the Waimea estuary, she decided she had to incorporate them into a painting.
The range of blues and greens in the hills and water was wonderfully complemented by the golden red tones of this coastal shrub.
This painting was a delight. Michelle explored with pedantic detail the sticks and detritus attached to the mai mai, and was also able to paint the stunning Richmond ranges in the background with the iconic MDF plant in the mid-ground.

Michelle studied this scene in an earlier petite painting, and had always meant to explore it in full size and intricate detail.
A front on assault of the Inkster's Bach was demanded, adhering to the rules of composition to showcase the soft curves of the water and the contrasting detail of the Boulder Bank and bach.
The annihilation of blue in this painting might be overwhelming for some, but Michelle loves the way the bach stands out using warmer tones. The hint of green in the foliage not only complements this but brings the scene back to nature.

This was an exploration in trying to achieve the windblown movement in these tortured trees, whilst incorporating intricate detail within the layers of branches. This painting must be viewed in person to see the many twisted twigs and layers in the shadows. A remote and weathered location, hammered by a persistent westerly.
