A while ago I explored the Arthurs Pass area with my good friend Dulkara, we walked up the Taramaku River, bush bashed through the thick & steep bush up to the open tops where we spent three days traversing the ridges. On the second afternoon, after lots of up and down ridge-line scrambling we approached Lake Morgan, checked out Lake Morgan Hut and despite the lack of water around I convinced Dulkara to spend the night at the top of Mt O’Shanessy. The views from there were absolutely spectacular, and in this painting looking back towards Lake Morgan I've tried to capture the essence of a West Coast sunset viewed from up high.
It has probably been one of my most technical paintings so far, and it's still progressing - here you can view the journey.
Camp Stream Hut, a historic musterers hut on the Te Araroa trail near Tekapo with Roundhill in the background.
