Middle Gorge Hut
Hidden up the Mistake River at the nor-western end of Lake Tekapo you will find Middle Gorge Hut. It is a cosy, well maintained little 6 bunk hut surrounded by steep peaks and tussock fields. The Hazard Range and Hall Range tower on each side of the valley with Mt Radove 2430m at the head of the valley. Due to the northern aspect the sun streams in from the head of the valley and bakes the valley floor.
​Late last year this painting was progressing well as pictured, although now much more tussock detail & snow shadowing have really given it shape.
Initially there was no snow around the hut, and it felt very brown and flat so therefore patches of snow were to be added. I really wanted to portray the coldness surrounding a little cosy hut up in the mountains.
The wood shed was also empty as I visited in spring and it must have run out over winter, so I decided to add in some wood for that cosy fire.

Poolburn Dam is nestled in a vast rolling landscape of unusual rock formations and is a popular spot for trout fishermen to spend some time trying their luck.

The reflections on the water will be a challenge. I want to retain some softness here as to not take attention away from the intricately detailed mountain range above. In particular the shadow play on Mt Potts and snow detail on the surrounding peaks.

Lake Emma - New Painting
Lake Emma - New Painting

The Lake Emma painting is evolving into a masterpiece of gorgeous colour and detail. At 1200 x 700mm the space in this new work is allowing me to incorporate some very intricate detail in the mountains, and will allow me to also paint the fine sun-lit tussocks in the foreground.
