Evening at Woolshed Hill in Arthurs Pass

February 16, 2026

Evening at Woolshed Hill in Arthurs Pass
On a recent adventure to explore a little bit more of the Arthurs Pass area with the kids we did a couple of short walks to get a feel for the area. Early in the morning we started with Carroll Hut, and with the morning cloud lifting this was a lovely cool walk with great views towards Arthurs Pass and some very different lush plants compared to around Nelson.
We ventured further on to Hawdon Shelter, where I decided to leave the kids (they were a bit tired from the early hike) and explore Woolshed Hill and beyond. It looked like a relatively short bush clad uphill and lots of nice open tops that would have lovely views all around. It was and despite a brisk wind the views were spectacular - here are some photos from the tops showing the back country up there.

Do you where Middle Gorge Hut is? I didn't before I saw it nestled in the mountains between the Cass and the Godley (near Lake Tekapo) on a topomap. At about 1240m and with big mountains towering...
