Big Omaha Wharf is located north of Auckland and off Leigh Road at Whangateau and is separated from Omaha Bay by a sand-spit. The harbour, on the north-eastern coast is a popular location for shellfish gathering, with the wharf nestled behind the sandspits that create the estuary. The harbour name "Whāngateau" was a traditional Māori name for the harbour and refers to the powerful tidal flows within the estuary.
