Michelle studied this scene in an earlier petite painting, and had always meant to explore it in full size and intricate detail.
A front on assault of the Inkster's Bach was demanded, adhering to the rules of composition to showcase the soft curves of the water and the contrasting detail of the Boulder Bank and bach.
The annihilation of blue in this painting might be overwhelming for some, but Michelle loves the way the bach stands out using warmer tones. The hint of green in the foliage not only complements this but brings the scene back to nature.
The Boulder Bank (Te Taero a Kereopa) is a remarkable 13.5km spit of smooth, round boulders formed naturally by coastal currents. This unique landscape, filled with rock pools and reefs, offers a rich habitat for kingfish, snapper, blue cod, and kahawai, making it a paradise for fishermen. However, it’s not without its challenges—keep an eye out for bronze whalers, which are known to steal caught fish. With only five baches remaining along the spit after a recent fire in 2021, this barren and exposed location has become a rare and fascinating place, marked by its harsh environment and the occasional shelter provided by stunted pōhutukawa trees.
