This cottage, captured in this art print, was recently featured in the news following its demolition in Hawke’s Bay. The abandoned and weathered farmhouse had stood beneath four beautiful walnut trees for around a century, long before the Hawke’s Bay Expressway was built through Chesterhope Station in the late 1990s.
The cottage first captured Michelle’s attention many years ago when she was visiting Hawke’s Bay and considering moving there. For decades, it stood quietly beside the expressway, becoming a familiar landmark and holding countless memories for those who passed by.
It is sad to see this piece of Hawke’s Bay history now gone, taking with it the stories and memories that had gathered around it over generations. Michelle’s painting preserves a moment in time, capturing the character and lonely beauty of a farmhouse that has now disappeared from the landscape.
