The chorus of morning birdsong is found along the Eastern Walkway in the suburb of Breaker Bay on the Miramar Peninsula in Wellington Harbour. Within this thin strip of land along the southeast coast of Miramar Peninsula the native tūī and pīwakawaka sing, with Barretts Reef, the Pencarrow lighthouses and the Rimutaka Range sitting in the background on a unusually calm day.
The Peninsula is underway with becoming a 'Predator Free Zone' and is progressing well with the increase in birdlife very noticeable. The area is also abundant in wharariki (mountain flax), tī kōuka (cabbage tree), kawakawa, pōhutukawa and a mix of other NZ native trees and plants which provide a rich habitat for the local birdlife.
