The Molesworth Station

April 29, 2022

This is the Molesworth Station, located in the top of the South Island. From a distance the Molesworth Station appears to be a rocky barren, un-inviting tussock clad wasteland with a fair amount of cattle and sheep scattered around...

On an Autumn day in the studio...

April 19, 2022

Working on this smaller Fall’s Dam scene while Autumn sets in today. Layering up the long golden grass. To achieve the soft movement of the grass many individual brush strokes are required, with washes of colour in between...

Mt Robert Ridge

April 12, 2022

With balmy weather and no wind, a quick morning trip along the Robert Ridge to Rotomaninitua/Lake Angelus was in order. The sun rose as I came out of the bush-line and I was rewarded with spectacular views all the way along the ridge as the valley cloud burnt off...

Silence at Sundown

April 06, 2022

This painting captures the last touch of Autumn sunlight highlighting the grass with the expansive Hawkdun Range basking in the background. These little buildings are scattered around the edge of Fall's Dam, some still being used as fisherman huts while others fade slowly into the past.

Finished

According to the apprentice this area needs more ‘brown’. I beg to differ. I think this one is finally finished!

Breaker Bay painting

March 23, 2022

More progress has been made on the Wellington scene featuring Breaker Bay from the Eastern Walkway loop. I am still laying out all the base elements, and entwining the many vibrant natives that tempt the local birdlife. Many many more layers to go on this one…

Rainbow Station

January 10, 2022

We planned to explore the Rainbow Station over the New Year with Rosa - 6 and Hazel - 4, tenting and checking out the hidden valleys and figuring how much we could carry and for how long. Unfortunately I injured my lower back (suspected herniated disc) two days before we were to leave.

Falls Dam Afternoon

December 15, 2021

The last month or so has not really gone to plan. I had expected to be working constantly on the large Falls Dam painting, however we have had one of the wettest spring/start of summers I can remember here in Nelson...

Stanley Point Sailboats

November 26, 2021

I painted Stanley Point Sailboats, with summer fun in mind, the distant moorings and the expectations of the local kids doing backflips into the sea. This contrasting with the urban city-scape. Stanley Bay is a beautiful area - it's right in the heart of Devonport but almost feels like it's own little retreat.

Taramaku River via Lake Morgan & Mt O’Shanessy to the Crooked River

November 08, 2021

With the most perfect weather window approaching after what has seemed like a very changeable winter/spring a good friend Dulkara and I made up a plan for two nights in the mountains...

Wellington coast

September 24, 2021

I had to take a break from Fall’s Dam recently. I was so immersed in it, I was overworking the layers of colour. Also started to get RSI in the wrist, when this happens I know that its time to move into something more free-form...
